What Is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is an educational framework that focuses on developing students' social and emotional skills. SEL aims to teach children and adults how to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. The core competencies of SEL include:
- Self-Awareness: Recognizing one's emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior.
- Self-Management: Regulating emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations.
- Social Awareness: Understanding and empathizing with others, especially those from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and including those with different personalities or dispositions from our own.
- Relationship Skills: Establishing and maintaining healthy and rewarding relationships based on cooperation.
- Responsible Decision-Making: Making ethical, constructive choices about personal and social behavior.

SandZ Academy focuses on children's education and well-being as we thoughtfully incorporate SEL principles into our content. This includes:
- Affirmations: Positive truths that help children develop a growth mindset, boost their confidence, and reinforce self-awareness and self-management skills. Affirmations help children focus on their strengths and build resilience when utilized right, so we seek to teach everyone how to use them. By regularly providing affirmations and stories, we help children internalize positive messages and learn valuable life lessons in a fun and engaging way.
- Inspirational Stories: Stories that convey SEL themes illustrate the importance of empathy, perseverance, and responsible decision-making. Through relatable characters and situations, our stories teach children how to handle various social and emotional challenges.
- SandZ Spotlight Newsletter: The SandZ Academy newsletter includes SEL themes, helping kids understand and practice these essential skills.

- Ask SandZ: A section where kids can ask questions and get advice, promoting social awareness and relationship skills.
- Kids Chat: A space for children to share their experiences, fostering a sense of community and empathy.
- SandZ Book Club: Hosted through Patreon, the SandZ Book Club is an online community where kids from different age groups can come together to explore and discuss books each month. By engaging with diverse stories and perspectives, children enhance their social awareness, empathy, and relationship skills. - The "SandZ Writes" PenPal Program: Also hosted through Patreon, this program allows kids from around the world to become penpals, exchanging letters and learning about each other's lives and cultures. This interaction helps children build strong communication skills, understand different perspectives, and develop lasting friendships. By participating in the SandZ Writes PenPal Program, children practice empathy, social awareness, and responsible decision-making in a meaningful and engaging way. The PenPal Program starts in Summer 2025.
